Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

  • What age can my child start playing rugby league?

    • Children as young as 2 years old can start in non-contact, fun-focused classes. The structure is adapted to different age groups, with more advanced skills and competitive play introduced as they get older.

  • Is it safe?

    • Yes, programs for young children emphasize safety and proper technique, with modified rules like tag rugby or limited contact in the early years to reduce risk. All coaches are qualified and have current background checks (DBS/background checks).

  • What equipment is needed?

    • Catterick Crusaders provide the playing kit for matches. For training, your child should have comfortable sportswear, appropriate footwear (trainers, boots), a water bottle, and weather-appropriate outer layers. A mouthguard is required for contact play.

Rules and Gameplay

  • How does the game differ from adult rugby league?

    • Youth rugby is designed to be age-appropriate. Younger age groups may use tag rugby (pulling a flag/tag instead of tackling) and have modified rules like no scrums or kicking. Full rules are gradually introduced as players develop.

  • How long are the sessions/games?

    • This varies by age group and club. Sessions can be around 50 minutes for the youngest children, and games typically consist of two halves, with the length increasing with age (e.g., U12s play 20-minute halves).

  • Can girls and boys play together?

    •  Yes we offer inclusive environments that encourage both girls and boys to participate in the sport.

Club Environment and Expectations

  • What can I expect from the club?

    • Expect a safe, inclusive, and fun environment with qualified coaches and a Club Welfare Officer. First aiders should be present at all games and concussion protocols must be followed.

  • What is expected of parents?

    • Parents are expected to adhere to a code of conduct which includes respecting officials' decisions, providing positive encouragement, and never ridiculing a player for mistakes. For younger children, a parent or designated adult may need to remain present during the session.
